Abstracts submitted to the annual meeting of the Association of Southeastern Biologists are reviewed for completeness and appropriateness by an editing board consisting of members of the program committee and the editor of the bulletin of the ASB, Southeastern Biology. Abstracts submitted for awards are further reviewed for eligibility by judges aligned with those organizations. Editors and judges are professional biologists. Abstracts are published in Southeastern Biology.
POSTERS
Posters should fit within a 46" (Width) x 44" (Height) space.
Boards and thumbtacks will be provided to display your poster. There will be two posters to a board, so please do not exceed the maximum size as it will overlap neighboring posters.

ORAL PRESENTATIONS
Oral presentations should be 12 minutes long with ~3 minutes left for questions. Please leave time to switch to the next presenter within the 15 minutes; there is no space between talks.

ASB 2018 Plenary Speaker - Dr. Jane Lubchenco
Science in a post-truth world
Science and society are inextricably linked. However, recent, high-profile examples of anti-science rhetoric, discounting of scientific evidence, and the emergence of populism appear to reflect a widening gap between science and society. In fact, in 2016 The Oxford English Dictionary declared “post-truth” to be its “Word of the Year”. Against this backdrop and drawing on her personal experiences as the Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and the Administrator of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the first U.S. Science Envoy for the Ocean, and decades of scientific research around the world, Dr. Lubchenco will discuss the ways in which scientists can help reshape the conversation through engagement and public understanding. Dr. Lubchenco believes that the science community must engage more vigorously with society and increase public understating to address problems, find solutions, and help create a better future for us all. She will use numerous examples from scientific information and engagement in coastal habitats and communities.
We are excited to welcome renowned marine ecologist Dr. Jane Lubchenco as the R.H. Martin Plenary Speaker at ASB 2018 in Myrtle Beach. Dr. Lubchenco served as Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and she served as a member of President Barack Obama’s Science Team (2009-2013). ASB 2018 will begin on Wednesday, 28 March, with a pre-plenary reception at 6PM, followed by the plenary at 7PM. There will be a brief Q&A session immediately following the plenary, and a subsequent post-plenary reception.
